The occasional flat tire is inevitable, but there are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of this happening. Flat tires are not only inconvenient, they can also create dangerous situations when your tire goes out while on the go.
Keep Your Tires Inflated
Make sure your tires are inflated to the right pressure. Too much pressure makes for a harder to navigate, rougher ride. On the other hand, too little pressure can cause accelerated and uneven wear on your tires.
Avoid Construction Sites
Steer clear of streets that are near construction sites, like new housing developments or office spaces. It’s not uncommon for sharp objects like nails, screws, or glass to be in the street. If you’re unlucky enough to drive over one at just the right angle, you may end up with a flat.
Quality Tread
When shopping around for new tires, look for ones with a thick tread that is puncture resistant. These may be more expensive, but the cost of consistently replacing tires is much higher.
Monitor Your Spare
Keep an eye on your spare tire to ensure that is has the required air pressure and no defects. If you find that the spare is damaged, defective, or missing altogether, don’t hesitate to replace it. You never want to be without a spare tire in case of an emergency.
