Changing Your Windshield Wiper Blades

Changing Your Windshield Wiper Blades

Changing your windshield wipers is important – wiper blades that don’t wipe effectively or are cracked or torn can be dangerous in obstructing your view while driving. Experts say wiper blades should be replaced every six to 12 months for optimum performance. It seems like a mundane task, but it is fairly simple and shouldn’t take you long to do.

You will need entire windshield wiper blades – your owners’ manual will tell you which kind you need – and a screwdriver (depending on what type of blade you have).

  1. Remember to buy the entire blade, not just the rubber insert.
  2. Look at your current windshield wiper and find the attachment that matches it in the replacement packaging.
  3. Read the directions on the package to see how you connect the attachment to the replacement blade.
  4. Lift up the arm of the wiper from the windshield.
  5. Remove the blade by either pushing on a tap and pulling the blade off, or using the screwdriver to lift the tab.
  6. Attach the replacement blade to the wiper arm by connecting the attachment first to the new blade, then onto the arm, or vice versa. This depends on your car and what is easier for you.
  7. Listen for a ‘click’ sound when attaching the new blade. This lets you know that it has been attached correctly.
  8. Tug on the blade to further assure it is properly attached.
  9. Lower the wiper arm onto the windshield – you are done!
