Cars are our very faithful servants, and they serve according to the attention and care we give them. It is easy to own a vehicle for many years without experiencing any major mechanical breakdown if you maintain it regularly. This article has combined some preventative car maintenance tips that will help you to keep your vehicle in top condition and avoid an emergency.
Cars run using a variety of fluids that need to be replaced and refilled from time to time. Your engine’s oil serves several important functions within your car’s engine: it keeps the metal parts of your engine from touching, it contains detergents that help clean your engine’s moving parts, it transports dirt to the oil filter instead of allowing it to build up in the oil pan, and it helps move heat out of the engine. The most important one is the motor oil that needs to be changed regularly, say after some miles as indicated by your service technician. Failing to do it will lead to a series of engine problems. Other essential fluids that should also be checked regularly are the transmission, power steering and brake fluids. All these fluids should be monitored and topped up if their level goes down and even replaced after one or two years based on what the car manual recommends.
The filters are the other important thing, and most drivers are conversant with the engine air filter. The cabin air filter is equally crucial, and it should also be cleaned frequently. Engine filters play a huge role in how the car moves and should be replaced after around 30,000 miles or else they will start making your engine overwork. The cabin air filter is all about comfort and affects the efficiency of your air conditioning system.
The braking pads are essential to your safety and always wear out after some time. When they are worn out, they produce some squeaking noise when you apply brakes, and this is an indication that they should be replaced. Failing to replace these pads damages the disc rotors which will also have to be replaced and cost you more. It is always a good thing to get your brakes looked at once a year and possibly replaced. The next time you get your tires rotated ask us to take a look at your brakes to. There is nothing more important to us than your safety and we will make sure that when you leave us your car is safer than when you first brought it in.
The spark plugs help to give your car the spark it needs to start and move well. Old plugs will make your vehicle inefficient and lead to other issues in the engine. While they do not have to be replaced regularly, they should be routinely checked to ensure they are in good condition.
The timing belt is connected to several parts of the engine, and it should be checked as well. Don’t live with annoying noises, clanks, rumbling, grinding sounds or anything other than the smooth hum of your engine in its youth. If your engine is not running at its best, it is probably burning more gas than it needs to and in a worst-case scenario – doing more damage to the engine itself. Your car battery does not require a lot of maintenance but always check it and ensure that the contacts are clean. Do not forget to look at the tires and have them rotated, balanced and the alignment checked every six months. This will increase their lifetime.
